Southmont: River Rats exceed fireworks goal
More than 100 people attended a June 5 fundraiser, staged by The River Rats and catered by Oscar's Fine Foods of High Point and the Boat Dock Beach Club.

Beth Livingston, managing partner of fireworks sponsor Coral Sands Point, won a beverage basket donated by the High Rock Shaggers. David Swink, River Rats' fireworks committee co-chairman, won the extra ticket raffle and placed second in the sponsorship contest.

Cathy Dunn, owner of fireworks sponsor Biscuit King, won the consolation prize and donated it for auction. Bob Allen, Lorrie Cooper, Kevin Hill and the shag club shared the grand prize.

Raffles and auctions included two elaborate tables donated by Maitland Smith Furniture. Tara Bass, River Rats vice president, won the New Business Sponsors contest prize donated by the Boat Dock.

The event generated net proceeds of almost $6,000 toward this year's 4th of July Fireworks program. Combined with recent donations from Dan and Cyndi Bachelor, Oakwood Acres residents, who continued their long-time sponsorship from Danbee Aerospace, Greensboro, and support received from two new Lexington participants, Carolane Propane Gas and Christo's Restaurants, the fundraiser boosted the Fireworks Fund over its goal for the cost of the holiday celebration.

The fireworks and music program is free to the public and will be presented July 4 from Oakwood Acres on Abbotts Creek at dark.

Alcoa Power Generating partners with HRL River Rats for 11th Annual Fireworks Show

For several years, Alcoa Power Generating Inc., Yadkin Division, has been the single greatest financial contributor to the July 4th Celebration on Abbotts Creek. This year, Alcoa will again serve as partner with the High Rock Lake River Rats in presenting the Fireworks show. The addition of Alcoa’s donation of more than 25% of the total cost of the event increases the funds raised this year to over ½ the amount required for its production.

The River Rats will meet on Thursday, May 1, at 7:30, at the Boat Dock Beach Club.

Prospective members and Fireworks supporters are encouraged to attend.

WHO ARE THE RIVER RATS?

In the mid-1980’s, a group of friends comprised of residents of High Rock Lake and “weekend warriors” congregated regularly to socialize. In 1987, while the group was gathered at a Southmont facility for a Christmas party, a need in the community was made known to those present and the group took up a collection of $650.00 to help. The following year, a similar event occurred and $1250.00 was collected to help the needy, including a family whose home had been destroyed by fire. In 1989, the group decided to further the tradition by holding an auction of items donated by local individuals and businesses to raise money to buy “Santa” gifts, food, and clothing for local needy families.

This worthwhile endeavor, combined with the social element, generated increasing interest from members of the community and throughout Davidson County. The original group of roughly 14 individuals formed an informal club and elected officers. Club membership was established and immediately began to grow in number.
